Renewing your coverage

Different types of health coverage have different renewal rules and timelines. It is important to review your coverage each year and report changes that could affect your eligibility, costs, or benefits.

Health plans purchased through Explore Health usually last for one calendar year, as long as you continue paying your monthly premium.

To keep Explore Health coverage for the next year, you must renew or enroll during Open Enrollment, which runs from Nov. 1 to Jan. 15.

Review your plan every year

Plans, provider networks, covered services, and monthly premiums can change from year to year. Reviewing your options each year can help you:

  • Find a plan that better fits your health needs
  • Lower your monthly premium or out-of-pocket costs
  • Update your doctors or prescription coverage

You may choose to stay in your current plan or select a different plan.

What happens if you do nothing?

If you do not update your application or choose a plan before the deadline:

  • Explore Health may automatically re-enroll you in your current plan if it is still available.
  • If your current plan is no longer available, Explore Health may enroll you in a similar plan.

Automatic re-enrollment may not be the best option for your needs or budget, so it is important to actively review your coverage each year.

Keep your information up to date

Update your Explore Health application when you have changes to:

  • Income
  • Household size
  • Address
  • Immigration status
  • Job-based health insurance offers
  • Medicare eligibility
  • Oregon Health Plan (OHP) eligibility
  • Other health coverage, including VA health coverage

Keeping your information current helps make sure you receive the correct amount of financial help and are enrolled in the right program.

Most people enrolled in OHP must renew their coverage when it is time for the state to review eligibility.

OHP will contact you if action is needed to renew your benefits. Be sure to:

  • Keep your mailing address and contact information current
  • Respond to requests for information
  • Report changes in income, household size, or other insurance coverage

Some people may be renewed automatically without needing to complete forms.

If you no longer qualify for OHP, you may qualify for financial help through Explore Health instead.

Medicare coverage also has yearly review and enrollment periods.

Medicare Open Enrollment

Medicare Open Enrollment usually runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 each year. During this time, people with Medicare can:

  • Change Medicare Advantage plans
  • Change Medicare prescription drug plans
  • Return to Original Medicare

Plans and costs may change each year, so reviewing your options can help you find coverage that better meets your needs.

Veterans enrolled in VA health care generally do not need to renew coverage each year in the same way Explore Health plans are renewed.

However, veterans should still:

  • Keep contact and eligibility information up to date with the VA
  • Review whether additional health coverage could help meet their needs
  • Report changes in other health coverage when applying for Explore Health financial help or OHP

Some veterans may qualify for more than one type of health coverage, depending on their situation.
